Dear Neighbors,
One thing we can all agree upon is the need to stand up and be counted. The Census is occurring right now, as it does once every ten years. Why does the Census matter? Because the Census is the basis on which the federal government allocates federal funds to each state.
The stakes are high--$37,000 per person, in fact. That’s how much New Mexico loses over the next ten years for every person who’s not counted in the 2020 Census.
In the middle of the COVID pandemic, the oil and gas bust, and the economic downturn, that’s money we cannot afford to lose. And nor can our schools, Medicaid and healthcare services, and protection of our water resources.
Just last week, the Donald Trump’s Census Bureau announced that all counting efforts for the 2020 census will end a month early, on September 30th. This delay will hurt rural communities the hardest.
So far, only 53% of New Mexican households have responded to the census. Here’s what we need to do:
-
If you’ve received your census packet in the mail, please fill it out today! It only takes a few minutes.
-
If you've already received your census packet, but prefer to fill out the form online instead of mailing it in, you can do so at 2020census.gov.
-
If you didn't receive a packet and don't have a 12-digit census ID number, you can still fill out the form online. Go to 2020census.gov and click on the line that says “If you do not have a Census ID, click here.”
-
If you know someone who hasn’t received a packet and doesn’t have access to the internet, they may also fill out the form via telephone by calling: 1-844-330-2020.
We are all in this together. Thank you!
Sincerely,
