"He who is not angry when there is just cause for anger is immoral. Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice. And if you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust."

I agree with Laura.  I don't mind the idea of the League sticking to the facts as we believe based on our own research, but facts rarely impress great numbers of people.  This is well researched issue in the literature about how to win votes.  The "weepy stories" are what move people.  I like the idea of the League sticking to the facts as it makes our organization look more professional and think that is good for a some legislators who would like to discount the presentations by the League (I personally have witnessed that).  However, some people need to get up and tell the stories like Elizabeth Whitfield did because it ultimately moved a lot of people.  If you put these people together with the  people who think their decision is based on facts, it all adds up to enough votes sometimes to get a bill passed.

A few years ago I spoke for myself in a committee hearing about a memorial to stop oil leasing close to Chaco Canyon. I began by explaining that I am a retired petroleum engineer and not opposed to fracking in general but was opposed to drilling near this site. The I explained how moved I was by Chaco Canyon when I visited. I said I thought it was a place like no other--magical, spiritual and I don’t remember what else. Though not an exactly weepy story, the memorial passed the  committee almost unanimously. Several conservative Republicans voted in favor including Pirtle. So maybe it works sometimes. Laura

But we are told that a personal story is more effective than facts, facts, facts.
