Legislative Hearing:
Update on the End-of-Life Options Act
|
On Tuesday Oct. 26th at 9:15 am, an expert panel will present an update to the Interim Legislative Health and Human Services Committee (LHHS). The full agenda for the two-day meeting is posted here (See October 25 - 26, 2021 Agenda).
End of Life Options New Mexico (EOLONM) Chair, Barak Wolff, will make opening comments and serve as moderator for the session. EOLONM volunteer, Phyllis Bergman, RN/FNP will share her personal story of her two sisters—one who struggled and ultimately could not access California’s medical aid in dying (MAID) law and the other who had a peaceful passing as one of New Mexico's first MAID deaths. Dr. David R. Grube, National Medical Director of Compassion & Choices, will provide a brief overview of national developments. NM Representative Debbie Armstrong, one of the bill's sponsors, will review the Elizabeth Whitefield End-of-Life Options (EWEOLO) Act with her colleagues recalling the provisions of the Act and how it is working. And last but not least, EOLONM Legal Policy Advisor Rob Schwartz, will highlight several legal issues of interest. Barak will conclude the presentation with an update about how the EOLONM non-profit organization is developing to help New Mexicans access the new law and improve all end-of-life options. It is anticipated that there will be at least 30 minutes for questions and discussion with the LHHS Committee members.
