Subject: Invite: Professional Development at New Mexico Capitol

Dick,

March 17th - League of Women Voters invited

Please join us for two exclusive professional development presentations in the Senate chamber at the New Mexico State Capitol, presented by the bipartisan National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), based in Denver. Only 40 people will be admitted to these free 30-minute sessions on a first-come, first-served basis. The invitation is open to you and/or other members of your team.

Curt Stedron, who directs the Legislative Training Institute at the NCSL, will be presenting:

Bursting Your Bias Bubble: Broadening Perspectives in a Polarized World

Despite easy access to every possible perspective and point of view, we find ourselves increasingly locked within an echo chamber of our own opinion. This dynamic increases our political polarization and robs us of the ability to develop our own information literacy and critical thinking skills. In this module, we examine the forces that create this “bias bubble” and explore methods to escape it, broaden our perspective and enrich our knowledge lives.

The Art of Legislative Negotiation

Negotiation is often a zero-sum game: You win, I lose. But negotiation in the legislative realm differs in many ways, with multiple stakeholders, complex interests, and both policy and political considerations to balance. Come learn about successful negotiation practices that produce more optimal outcomes.

Our schedule for the day:

10 a.m.              Participants arrive. No one will be admitted after 10:15 a.m.

10:30 a.m.        Filming of “Bursting Your Bias Bubble: Broadening Perspectives in a Polarized World”

11 a.m.              Break

11:20 a.m.         Filming of “The Art of Legislative Negotiation”

Noon                  Production ends

(Please note: The two presentations will be filmed so that state legislators and staff from across the nation can benefit from this training. The filming will largely focus on the speaker, but the audience may appear on camera. If you attend, you will be agreeing to be potentially filmed. This content is being produced for education purposes only and will not be offered for sale.)

Please send an email to me at gene.rose@ncsl.org with the names(s) of people from your organization who would like to attend and any questions you might have. Again, we will be limiting participants to 40, so reach out as soon as possible to reserve your seat!

Thank you for your consideration. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me, or reach me at the phone number below.
