Dear LWV Immigration Group Members,
The Leadership Team of the LWV Immigration Group met on September 24th and wanted to send you this periodic “newsletter”.
MEETING ON ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF MIGRATION
We were extremely pleased with the discussion and turnout at our Zoom meeting on September 23rd about the Economic Impacts of Migration. The presentations by Kristie DePena, Director of Immigration Policy at the Niskanen Center and Madeline Zavodny UNF professor and former economist at the Federal Reserve Banks of Dallas and Atlanta provided a meaningful framework of information and data on this complex topic.
The Leadership Team thinks that there is a need to change the narrative on immigration in the United States to focus on the strategic and economic advantages of immigration. The discussion and excellent questions explored this topic.
We are pleased to share the video of this talk and the slides with you and encourage you to share it broadly with others. The two speakers have given their permission for that. This is the link and password to the Zoom recording:
Passcode: &A9?=9Jp
We also put together a Resource List on the Economic Value of Immigration which is available at https://www.lwvsandiego.org/content.aspx?page_id=5&club_id=681146&item_id=104759&. It contains links to many articles, including the July 2024 CBO report Effects of the Immigration Surge on the Federal Budget and the Economy.
LEADERSHIP TEAM DISCUSSION ON 9/24:
The Leadership Team will continue to explore ways to communicate to the broader public about the positive and strategic value of immigration. We are distressed at the bitter and negative rhetoric of the election campaign season and the potential impact of “mass deportation”. “Misinformation” (aka lies) about immigrant crime and non-citizen voting need to be addressed.
While the LWVUS may not be able to express concerns about this, we think that we as individual citizens can write op-eds and inform our networks.
DACA TO HAVE ORAL ARGUMENT BEFORE THE US SUPREME COURT ON OCTOBER 10TH:
Information about the DACA case before the Supreme Court is available at https://www.fwd.us/news/daca-court-case/. There is additional information from the National Immigration Law Center at https://www.nilc.org/work/daca/. This will be an important case for us to watch.

We are pleased that Marlene O’Brien, LWV Member from Massachusetts, past LWVUS Board Member and attorney with extensive experience is joining the Leadership Team.

LWV Immigration Discussion Group Leadership Team
