I highly recommend you watch last night’s webinar linked below if you missed it. There are solid recommendations about what we can do as League members to address the mis- and dis-information about refugees and other non citizens.
Immigration is extremely complicated, and we are seeing even more efforts to undermine our already broken system. The current administration is trying to reduce the cap on refugees to 7,500 without getting Congressional approval, further exacerbating the crisis.
Many people who are lawfully present can no longer buy insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace.
No significant immigration reform has happened since Reagan. Meanwhile over 60, 000 people-80 percent of whom have no criminal records-are in detention. DHS says they have deported over 100,000. Detainees have little to no due process and access to immigration attorneys. Immigration judges are being forced out in massive numbers.

To those of you who attended our Zoom webinar/meeting yesterday, I hope you found it educational and worth your time. Our two speakers, Wendy Young, President of KIND (Kids in Need of Defense) and Karen Musalo, Professor of Law at the University of California, San Francisco and founding director of the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, provided us with very important and timely information. As always, Susan Martin, our moderator and member of LWV-US Immigration Interest Group, did a superb job.
