As families face an affordability crisis and the cost of child care continues to spiral, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) has overseen the landmark achievement of establishing New Mexico as the first state to offer universal child care. This milestone stands in stark contrast to actions taken by the Trump administration, including attempting to freeze funds for child care assistance; launching targeted attacks against the Head Start program; repealing Biden-era rules designed to cap family costs and support the workforce; and carrying out mass layoffs of support staff, thereby reducing financial and administrative guidance for local providers. Additionally, New Mexico was the only state in the nation to fully fund ACA subsidies after the Trump administration rescinded them, and saw enrollment growth as a result. At a time when the economy is flagging and crushing expenses for health care, food, and gas leave families needing support more than ever, these respective administrations’ priorities could not be clearer.
Gov. Lujan Grisham has moved New Mexico forward by focusing on the biggest challenges facing the country, from child care and energy costs to health care and housing. And she has done this by listening to the diverse perspectives of the state’s voters, including Hispanic and Native American communities and rural communities.
