Each year I try and walk the Gila River as it passes through the Wilderness. Most years I hike from Grapevine where the west, east and middle forks come together above the 40-mile Gila River Canyon to Turkey Creek. I go just to get a sense of what the Gila looks like, how the river has changed, and how I have changed....... I would like to say I've learned something of this river, but the truth is I barely know the Gila. Instead I have learned something of myself, and the culture we share. And the culture we share is one that would put a dam on the last wild river, before we even know what a wild river is.

AWSA Decision Continued:Next Interstate Stream Commission Meeting Set for September 17Time & Location to be Determined
New Mexico is less than 20 weeks away from the deadline to notify the Secretary of the Interior if it will move forward with a Gila River diversion project under the Arizona Water Settlements Act. (AWSA). The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (ISC) began the decision making process on August 26 in Albuquerque and is scheduled to make a final decision on the Gila River's fate in November. The next meeting is set for September 17 in either Albuquerque or Santa Fe.

Earth Matters Interview with TNC's Martha Cooper on Gila River Flow Needs Assessment
BOR Diversion Site #2 examined as part ofBureau of Reclamation Appraisal Report
The NM Interstate Stream Commission kicked off its Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) decision process last week at a meeting in Albuquerque. The commission must decide if it will pursue a diversion project or instead use AWSA funding to implement non-diversion conservation, efficiency, and sustainable water management alternatives to meet water needs here in SWNM. The commission will hold 2 more meetings -one scheduled for September 17 and another in October. At the meetings the ISC will hear the results of studies and analyses conducted to inform the commission's decision. The ISC makes its final decision in November.
The Gila River Flow Needs Assessment is one of the studies critical to understanding the ecological impacts of a Gila River diversion project. Earth Matters co-producer, Allyson Siwik, talks about the report's findings with Martha Cooper, Southwest NM Field Representative with The Nature Conservancy, the convener of the study.
The interview rebroadcasts Thursday, September 4 at 10 am and 8 pm on Gila / Mimbres Community Radio 89.1FM and web stream, and via podcast anytime. Tune in!
