But this Crocker fellow is a fool and lucky to be alive. When a rattlesnake rattles in your path, you don't amble by it daring it to bite you. And an angry human is much more dangerous and unpredictable than any snake. When that driver pulled over the first time, he should have done a 180 and called the police right there.
