I am living proof that a cat can take you out; I posted this on FB on Halloween 2015:

My true Halloween story: 10/31/2015
On today’s ride I ventured on a path I had never been on near 120th and I-25 in north of Denver.  I headed west on this Green Way trail which was flanked by houses on the left and a ditch like creek and houses on the right. I saw a black cat up ahead on the trail and I surprised it as I passed by.  For whatever crazy reason it ran with me so I thought I would try and out sprint it. I had to be doing at least 22 miles an hour an then it tried to go around my front wheel.  I inadvertently ran over the cat which immediately swept my front wheel from under me caused me to go down. In a split second I bounced on the concrete went down the bank and landed in the creek.  (Physics is a wonderful thing) I was so shocked by the fact that I was in water so I jumped up and started to climb back up to the trail.  My bike ended up latching onto a branch by the handlebar so I had to untangle it.  This prevented my bike from totally following me into the creek. The bike was fine and I rode 12 miles home in a muddy, soaked and bloody kit.  Moral of the story: Do not spook black cats on Halloween.

It's a feral cat colony.  On the other side of the fence for the parking lot west of the trail, there is a cat shelter and several containers of dry cat food set out, and a sign stating it's a feral cat colony and not to disturb.  Either the cats are darting across the trail, or other wild animals who are attracted by the kibble are.  So slow down just north of Menaul.  It just takes a cat-sized animal knocking your front wheel a few degrees to the side and your bike will steer right out from underneath you.
