The fee schedule is at http://www.usacycling.org/2017-schedule-of-fees.htm

You will notice that a first time official's license is $25 rather than $50.  I do think this is a good thing since over the years I have noticed and would estimate that about half of the "I'll give it a try" folks decide that officiating is not for them.  I think of the reduced fee as a good approach to get more people involved without too much of a cost burden.

That being said, there are more costs involved than just the license fees.  You will need a small investment in clothing and equipment if you decide to continue with officiating.  Nothing to break the bank, but certainly something to be aware of.  I probably spend about an average of $50/year on these things.  In return though, you do get a fee for officiating events commensurate with your position and the amount of time you spend at an event.  You additionally are paid for travel costs, usually just the mileage (currently $0.46/mile), but sometimes also a food stipend should the time go longer.  If you officiate at an event that requires overnight stays, then the promoter covers that cost as well.  All this is to say that you shouldn't *lose* money to be an official, but, as my officiating mentor told me, if you are in this to make money you have chosen poorly!

The real investment you make though is in the racing community.  By being an official, you make it easier to have safe, well-run, and officially recognized races for our dedicated racers.  In a small population/large geography state like NM, we have a definite challenge to have enough officials on hand to ensure that all events are covered.  That is what this request is about.  I have been officiating for almost twenty years now and I have found it to be one of the most gratifying aspects (IMHO) of involvement in bicycle racing.  The fantastic efforts, enthusiastic participants, and dedicated promoters have been a true pleasure to participate and associate with.  It does take a community to make these races happen, and being an official is one way to make sure that they continue to happen.  I urge anyone interested to get involved and give a try!

With respect,

John Jordan, USAC Official, ex-Officio NMBRA, Olev Rapido/Trek Team Board Member, Road/MTB/CX license holder, member of the NM cycling community

Subject: [NMCycling] URGENT!! Official shortage in New Mexico

Racers,

We have a big problem in New Mexico; particularly in the Albuquerque area. There's a major shortage of race officials. If this shortage is not resolved immediately, races WILL be cancelled (Tierra del Sol on March 25 is in serious jeopardy).

I realize we racers want to race and often are not willing to judge at a race and that's completely understandable. But I also know we racers have family, friends co-workers, etc who might be willing to help out.

"So how can I help" you ask. Pamela Thullen is holding a CAT-C Officials Clinic on March 19th. I'm requesting that we all consider becoming an official and/or asking as many family, friends, teammates, co-workers etc to help us out. Anyone interested in attending the Officials Clinic on March 19th please contact Pamela Thullen at pamalanmcycling@gmail.com ASAP so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

Other things to note. Becoming an official does not mean you're committed to judge each and every race. You can pick and choose. Also, every official is paid a small fortune after performing their services. :D

Thanks for your consideration,

Dennis
