Fair point. But if you announce before hand, the person in front will move over to give you that wiggle room.

I’m certainly pro-bell/ notice, but seems to me the primary cause of the accident was d-head’s in ability to steer a wide berth. Passing wide enough to account for possible changes in the other rider’s direction of travel is the courtesy that matters most. It’s fine that you want to advocate for notice, but you should lobby louder for passing with plenty of wiggle room.

I for one hate constantly having to yell out "on your left", or whatever other announcement that may be required, when coming up from behind. So I got myself a bell. Easy peasy!!!

Totally agree with you. I have noticed it has been happening at an increasing rate over the years. I consider it to be rude and dangerous. Two things we do not want to get a reputation for doing.

This past Sunday i was passed by another cyclist while doing 22mph and I took a spill. This cyclist did not announce before they passed me. I honestly do not remember all the details, just them passing and then it's all blank. I ended up in the ER with a concussion. Some people from my group that where in the back said and that we bumped shoulders and i started swerving, then my handle bar went 90 degrees to the right and i went over it. The culprit of the accident claims that i was startled and i lost control.

Regardless, passing another cyclist unannounced is one of the rudest and most stupid things you can do to a fellow cyclists. I can't even begin to count the number of times i have been passed by other cyclists announced. The last time i pointed it out to the guy that did it, we got into a fight. For all of you that pass others unannounced, stop doing it! It is flat out dangerous. People do not have eyes at the back of their heads and will not see you coming. We take a chance every time we go out against cars. Let's not have to worry about each other too.
