Pat Davis' current plan for Washington (behind the co-op, between Central and Zuni) will eliminate the center turn lane and have a bike lane only on the East side of Washington, making an important segment of the official bike route unsafe. Cyclists going South-bound on Washington will no longer have a wide shoulder to allow cars to pass them. Eliminating the center turn lane also endangers cyclists since there's nowhere to safely wait to make a turn.
This segment is the official bike route that connects the North-South painted bike lanes on Washington north of Central and the East-West painted bike lanes on Zuni. Bicycling will become very hazardous in that stretch, putting school children and adult lives at risk to just make a few parking spaces for a few buildings that already have the necessary parking per their zoning.
Non-cyclists, this is also bad news for you too because:
- you won't be able to easily pass cyclists (given the lack of bicycle lane). Numerous cyclists will be on this road because it's one of the few roads on the official ABQ bike route.
- you're more likely to be held up as cars AND cyclists waitings in the road to turn (given the deletion of the center turn lane)
