I’ll leave my comments at this: Old guys shouldn’t believe they’re faster or better than a younger guy who beats them. But, and I hope this doesn’t sound pathetic, we do take our riding and racing seriously.  Gordon

Two things:

1) an introduction... I'm moving from Denver to ABQ sometime in early October, and having been racing a little over 30 years, I thought I'd sign up for the bike racer group to get a leg up on the goings on in the ABQ/NM racing scene

2) an idea... There's a really nice system to adjust performances for age that the VTTA (Veterans TT Association) in the UK uses to normalize race results.  Basically, for any given distance, there's a 'standard' for every age, and your race results are compared to the standard for your age.  Within a given age group, raw times are used, but for the overall results, scores are based on the amount your time is over or under the standard.  For example, a 79 y.o. who is 40 seconds faster than their standard would rank higher than a 35 y.o. who is only 39 seconds faster than theirs.  Might work in the scenario Gordon is referencing

Looking forward to getting down to ABQ and integrating into the racing scene.

Your right it’s not about the money. I agree if $5.00 is that important the participant probably can’t afford the entry fee. It’s the idea of not being recognized. For example, In the first TT Phil Shew’s time was 26 something. The winner’s time was 23 something. Phil is 79 years old. My guess is Phil’s time on any age graded scale is much more impressive than the actual winner. I’m only guessing but Phil would probably like to be recognized as having put in a pretty darn good ride. Instead he is listed as 7th place out of 10 male riders. I’m really really glad someone if putting on the series and in no way do I want anyone to be upset with me or my comments.

I pledge any money I were to win, age group or otherwise I will donate to junior cycling. Gordon Sargent

I've always asked if masters really race for the money. Really? The engineers from Sandia need 5 dollars?  I cared when i was in college, but not so much now that I'm all grown up (physically more than mentally).

Seems like its nice for juniors and in the elite race category to draw people from elsewhere. For some kid trying to make it to the big time made sense but was always barely 20 bucks prize money even for the win. About  1/50 of what they had to pay to race. This is mostly because people think that  the15 different age  categories with everyone a winner all need money.

Rambling thoughts and opinion I've have for years. May or may not be shared by others, but I personally think that if a masters racer is only coming for the 5 dollar prize, than they probably wouldn't come anyway.

I will personally congratulate the winners. Is that enough?

Ps, glad there is still someone willing to put these races on, they should actually get ALL the riches. Promoting races is a pain.

Mike, since I’ve been doing the TT series for many many years I’m going to share a couple of thoughts. First, thanks for directing/managing everything that goes into running the event. If not for TTs I probably wouldn’t race at all. So again thanks.

The other matter is this: No one over 55 or 60 has the remotest chance of winning any of the prize money (unless of course there is really low turnout. On the distaff side you have a couple freaks of nature, Susan and Mindy which, of course, weakens my point). Year after year some of the older riders are your most loyal participants. So please consider some incentive for those of us who like it or not got old.  Gordon Sargent

All,

The date for the final event is Sunday, August 21.  Not the 24th as I stated below.  Sorry about that.

Thanks,

Mike

Subject: TT Series Update

All,

The final event of the TT series is  Sunday, August 24.  Registration  closes at 5:00 on Saturday.  The 35 km option has been added for this event.  This will be a great warm-up for the state championship in September. The payout will be a little different.  For this event – we will pay out to 5 places ($75, $50, $25, $25, $25) for both men and women.  If you have already signed up for the 17 km and you want to change the 35  – send me an email.  Everyone will need to pick up a new number for this event.  Please come by the registration tent to pick up your number.

Randy Corcoran is putting on the Paula Higgins Memorial Record Challenge (and the NM State Championship) this year. It will be on Sept. 4 (https://www.bikereg.com/recordchallenge ).  The medals for the TT series will be awarded at this event.

Also – check out the pictures from the previous events (Albert Waters Photography).

·       If you are doing the 35 km race, please stick around for the results.  Payouts will be made as soon as complete results are in.

·       Reminder – the course is the Algodones course this year (not the Double Eagle course)

·       Start times will be emailed and posted to the racers list after registration closes.
