Hello-

The League has had to curtail many of our normal activities this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but we want everyone to know that we are still in business and beginning to look toward next year. If you feel like you would like to know more about what is happening and what is planned, please feel free to join the board meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3. We have attached an agenda.

This is the usual kind of board meeting, but you will have a chance to learn more about an upcoming activity, Program Planning that will be of interest to everyone. Program Planning is a special meeting we will hold early next year. This is the meeting at which we discuss projects for the coming year and learn more about what members are interested in actually working on.

LWVCNM is a member of APD Forward, the coalition of community groups monitoring the behavior of the Albuquerque Police Department. This is a major area of interest and we need volunteers to work with Karen Douglas as the coalition works to change the way the police interact with local residents. Please contact her if you are interested.

We know you’ve barely recovered from the last election, but in 2021 communities throughout our coverage area of Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance and Valencia will hold their municipal elections. It doesn’t have the excitement of a presidential election, but it’s a wonderful chance to talk with local officials and learn the issues as we put together our voter guide. In 2021 we will do an online guide for many communities, and a printed guide for the largest cities. Karen Wentworth is looking for a small group of people to mentor through the process of putting together Voter Guides. Please let her know if you are interested.

This could be especially interesting to people who are new to the state. Where else will you find out how to reach to mayor who runs his whole town from the cell phone in his back pocket? Or learn ways to find candidates in a community where all the candidates running for mayor gave the NM Secretary of State incorrect addresses and phone numbers? Voter Guide workers learn to be amateur detectives in the fight for democracy. It is a challenging way to learn how politics work at the grass roots level in New Mexico.

Here's the invitation to the Zoom meeting.
