JUNE EDUCATIONAL MEETING

Join us for the inaugural Brown Bag LUNCH & LEARN Series

THURSDAY, JUNE 8th, Noon – 1PM

You spoke, we listened! With our membership split between returning to in-person monthly educational meetings and those who prefer to stay on Zoom, we have hopefully found a solution that addresses both options: the hybrid model.

Bring a bag lunch to our LWVCNM Office Conference Room at 6739
Academy Road NE (ample parking), visit with other members, enjoy the presentation, and stay for a Dessert Bar, hosted by the LWVCNM Board. Prefer the comfort of your home or convenience of your office? The ZOOM link is below.

For those attending in-person, please RSVP at 505-884-8441, the LWVCNM office phone or send an email to lunch@lwvcnm.org. Leave your name, phone number (just in case we need to reach you) and how many members and/or guests you are registering. Thank you in advance for registering...as this will help us with the room set up. The Zoom invitation is at the end of the email.

Expanding Civic Engagement Locally

At our 75th anniversary celebration our keynote speaker, Roberta Cooper Ramo, asked the League to advocate for a statewide required course in civic education. By a fortuitous coincidence our monthly meeting on Thursday, June 8th explores Civic Engagement in the Albuquerque area.

To find out how this is happening locally we have invited representatives from Albuquerque Public Schools and One Albuquerque.to tell us how each of these entities is engaging students and adult volunteers to take civic responsibility within the community.  We may also get pointers on how the League can assist with their endeavors.

Our panelists are:

Julie Ornelas

Julie Ornelas teaches 8th grade Social Studies at Tony HIllerman Middle School in Albuquerque. She has almost 30 years of experience as a classroom teacher and over the years has taught various Social Studies subjects in grades 6-12. She was the 2016 New Mexico History Teacher of the Year sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. In 2022 she was selected as a PBS Digital Innovator All Star Educator.  Julie recently completed two PBS projects on Democracy with a team of educators from across the country. She strives to make current issues relevant to her students.

Doug Small

Doug is the Civic Engagement Manager and Interfaith Liaison with One Albuquerque. The Office of Civic Engagement has four primary focus areas: volunteer engagement which offers a large list of volunteer opportunities for residents to get involved, education partnerships which create opportunities for students and recent graduates as volunteers to network and hone their skills, community conversations where residents can engage with City leaders, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
