With Election Day one week away it’s time for a reminder about Mis and Dis Information.

What is Misinformation? Inadvertently sharing false information without the intent of harm.

Disinformation is Intentionally sharing false information with the intent of harm.

Don’t be fooled, bad actors are becoming ever more skilled at spreading lies using all kinds of techniques. False rumors and facts are spread, pictures are faked, voices are faked. It is no longer true that what you see is what you get.

What to do? Be skeptical. To ensure that what you are reading or being told is true, consider the source, check the date, cross check information, read past the headline, and question emotionally charged content.

Do Not Repeat or Quote Bad Information. Stop the spread.

Do share accurate information. Without mentioning the wrong info, set the record straight by sharing the correct messages.

The News Literacy Project has developed a Misinformation Dashboard for the 2024 Election. It is a tool for tracking the topics and tactics of 2024 election misinformation. The link to their website is News Literacy Project. The New Mexico Secretary of State (SOS) also has Rumor vs Reality information here.
