Tree New Mexico Summer 2022 Newsletter

July 2022

Dear Friends of Trees,

We hope this finds everyone well and enjoying nature as much as possible.

We completed our busiest planting season with four ABQ NeigborWoods plantings and a NM NeighborWoods planting in the International District (ID). The ID event was funded by an EPA Cooperative Agreement and included 100 trees planted in resident's yards, 50 fruit trees planted on public and private lands, and 200 trees given away with additional funds from TreeGreenNM, Arbor Day, and Dollar General.

The ABQ NeighborWoods plantings were funded by City Councilor's Davis and Benton and ABQ Parks and Recreation and included 100 trees planted in resident's yards and 100 trees given away. We are grateful to all funders and donors and to Apache Corporation who donated 300 of the giveaway trees for the ABQ NeighborWoods events.

Tree New Mexico has increased the tree canopy in and around ABQ by 6,166 trees! Thank You to all our wonderful volunteers, planting team leaders, neighborhood association leaders, funders, and donors! We couldn't do this without you!

Rachel Hendrix joined Tree New Mexico in January as a NeighborWoods Coordinator. A wonderful addition to our team, Rachel brings conservation experience, organizational skills, and a digital media background.

Rachel graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Film and Digital Media and fell into the conservation field by joining a Conservation Crew with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) in Albuquerque. She gained a greater appreciation for New Mexico’s natural places while building and maintaining trails, removing invasive species, and planting trees. In addition to her five seasons with RMYC, Rachel created a variety of digital content as a Digital Media Fellow with the National Park Service in Washington, D.C.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Rachel enjoys spending time in the Bosque and hiking in the Sandia Mountains. Rachel is excited to combine her digital media background with her love for conservation with Tree New Mexico's focus on urban forestry and educating New Mexican's on how to care for their trees. Recently, Rachel completed the ABC Tree Steward Program.

Tree Care Recommendations

WATERING: Temperatures are high. Please water your trees at least 3x a week, low and slow, unless there is significant rain. Make sure trees are well mulched and that the mulch is completely wet through so that it does not wick water from the tree roots but holds the moisture close to the tree. As trees start to mature you can cut back on watering a bit, but trees need to be watered for the first three years. Watch videos on our website on how to water and how to plant a tree. <https://Treenm.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=22c62a9078a37468fe44282c1&id=ac5dcaf7b6&e=c3f73e6dfe> Tree Tips - Tree New Mexico (treenm.org)

WEED KILLER: Please refrain from using weed killer, Pre-emergent, or Weed and Feed near your trees! These products can kill trees and bees, and injure wildlife, pets, and children, as well.

STAKING: Arborist Evan Baker shared his tree staking methodologies. You can find the tips on our website at <https://Treenm.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=22c62a9078a37468fe44282c1&id=7050289170&e=c3f73e6dfe> Tree Tips - Tree New Mexico (treenm.org)

International District Tree Planting,
Education, and Air Quality Monitoring Project!

EPA Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program is funding tree plantings and tree education for a total of $200,000 in the International District (ID) for two years. A portion of this money goes to our partner, the Health Equity Council, to conduct air quality monitoring. In addition, Arbor Day, Dollar General, and TreeGreenNM donated funds to increase the number of trees in the ground at the first giveaway in May 2022.

The project involves a planting of 100 neighborhood trees, a planting of 50 fruit trees, a giveaway of 200 trees, three Tree Walk&Talks and three Tree Workshops in 2022. And all the same things in 2023! Tree New Mexico will plant the trees using our Community Planting model and include our usual tree planting and tree maintenance education at every step.

Tree New Mexico is grateful to all our funders in this project: EPA EJCPS, Arbor Day, Dollar General, and TreeGreenNM. And a BIG Thank You to all our partners: Health Equity Council (HEC), International District Health Communities Coalition (IDHCC), City Councilor Pat Davis, District 6, East Central Ministries, NM Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NMIADA), and Dakota Tree Project.

KUNM Community Partnership with IVS and TNM

Tree New Mexico is grateful to KUNM for teaming up with Independent Vehicle Service (IVS) to plant trees in Albuquerque! As part of the KUNM Community Partnership in March, 2022, Independent Vehicle Service recognized donor's gifts to KUNM and provided a separate donation for trees to Tree New Mexico for the KUNM ‘thank you’ gift. These 150 trees will absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and cool surface temperatures in neighborhoods and hopefully create new memories for generations to come.

KUNM brings you a deeper understanding of the world we live in every day, with important shows like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Living on Earth. Shows that keep you informed on politics, social change, and the environment. Knowledge is powerful and the information you find on KUNM is valuable. <https://Treenm.us16.list-manage.com/track/click?u=22c62a9078a37468fe44282c1&id=9e0aa81443&e=c3f73e6dfe> KUNM

Tree Stewards Graduate and Support Trees in ABQ!

Tree New Mexico, on behalf of the ABC Tree Steward Program Partners, recently announced the graduation of 16 new Tree Stewards. A graduation celebration was held on Saturday morning, June 4, 2022 at the Woodward House Tree Nursery and Outdoor Classroom with over 50 volunteers participating in the celebration.

A collaborative training program, it is designed for people who love trees, love their community and want to support the healthy growth of both. The hands-on and classroom training sessions cover: tree identification, tree anatomy, pruning, propagation, irrigation, and more.

The program runs 12-weeks and includes weekly materials for review, a combination of in-person and on-line instruction, recorded videos of past classes for review/makeup, in-person training scheduled at alternative times throughout the week/weekend and self-directed activities.

The next ABC Tree Steward Program will begin the month of August 2023. Applications will be made available June 1, 2023. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Kelly White at kwhite at tree.com <mailto:kwhite at tree.com> with questions and to request their name be placed on a priority list as space in the program will be limited.

Tree New Mexico is grateful to be part of the Let's Plant Albuquerque Team!

Mayor Keller asked Albuquerque citizens to plant a tree for every child for a total of 100,000 trees by 2030. Tree New Mexico, with the help of many wonderful volunteers, funders, and donors, is responsible for almost 6,000 of these trees in Albuquerque.
