[Neighbors] Thanks to Ihatov

On Sunday, June 18, I felt dizzy and so I laid down on the patio of Ivatov,
the bakery/coffee shop on Central, where I was enjoying a slice of tomato
basic quiche, feeling lightheaded. My fellow patrons called 911, and
provided shade from the sun, water, and emotional support until help
arrived. The medics who answered the call quickly determined my vitals and
mental state were OK and allowed me to refuse ambulance transport to the
hospital. I have had such episodes since childhood (caused by *vasovagal
syncope) *although far fewer as an adult. None have caused serious
injuries, partly because I recognize the onset and get horizontal before
passing out. But I am now 90 years old, so the 911 call was warranted,
since the same symptoms could indicate other more serious problems.

I had walked to the bakery from my nearby apartment and needed help getting
home. An Ihatov employee came out to the patio to say that the crew had
agreed one of them would transport me in their car. I gladly accepted, and
the young woman making the offer chauffeured me home, helped me into my
apartment and assured herself I was settled comfortably. I cannot say how
much this generous support meant. I always knew that Ihatov baked the best
bread I had ever tasted, but until now did not realize they also employed
the kindest and most generous employees. Gracias a la Diosa and Ihatov!
