From Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins: Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins invites the community to a free special event & keynote address to raise awareness about heroin and opioid abuse in our community Monday, April 11, 2016 5:00 p.m. African American Performing Arts Center, 301 San Pedro Drive NE. Sam Quinones, author of “Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic” will deliver a keynote address at 6:30 p.m., followed by a roundtable discussion with leaders from the Heroin Awareness Committee, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Albuquerque Public Schools, the UNM Health Sciences Center and Bernalillo County. Our community faces a major public health crisis, a true epidemic of heroin and opioid abuse that is ripping families apart, draining public resources and creating a new  generation of addicts. But Bernalillo County, the US Attorney’s Office, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and Healing Addiction in Our Community are working to create new strategies for prevention and intervention to turn the tide in this epidemic.
