Grow Your Knowledge with a Home Landscaping Class

Bernalillo County
– Residents of Bernalillo County this weekend will have the opportunity to attend an educational class on home water conservation for landscapes and successful practices for plants in the New Mexican climate.

The class, titled “Successful Water Practices and Role of Plants,” will be held this Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. – noon at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House, 6029 Isleta Blvd. SW, in the South Valley. Part of the five-class Bernalillo County Open Space Backyard Farming Series, Saturday’s session will build off lessons learned in previous months on soil practices and home sustainability, but will still serve as a useful stand-alone experience for those interested in home gardening and landscaping improvement.

The session this Saturday will focus on techniques for rain-water capture and drip water irrigation, along with xeriscaping strategies with native and drought-resistant plants. It will further discuss strategies for plant selections in sunlight and shade, the role of plants in residents’ backyard biospheres, and how to design landscapes for both aesthetic pleasure and home gardening use.

Bernalillo County’s Backyard Farming Series is a collaborative effort with Landscape for Life, a successful national program which provides educational resources for organizations to teach courses on sustainable home gardening and creating healthy residential landscapes. The goal of the series locally is to give participants practical information on transforming their backyards into a thriving urban oasis of food, medicine and wildlife habitat.

The following session, to be held on Saturday, April 16, will continue lessons on the role of plants in Bernalillo County landscaping, as well as discuss natural and recycled building materials for home terrain. The final session on Saturday, May 14 will conclude with strategies for home garden design.

Residents interested in participating in Saturday’s session of the Backyard Farming Series, and/or the sessions on April 16 and May 14, can register online at www.bernco.gov/openspace, or call (505) 314-0398 for more information. There is no cost to attend.
