Bernalillo County to Honor Unclaimed and Indigent Residents with
Memorial Burial
Service

Bernalillo County – The county, in conjunction with Daniels Family Funeral Services, will honor Bernalillo County unclaimed and indigent residents with a public memorial burial ceremony on Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, 9:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, 700 Yale SE. Fairview Cemetery is a new location for the burial service this year.

Commission Chair Art De La Cruz, Vice Chair Wayne Johnson, Commissioner Lonnie Talbert, Sheriff Manuel Gonzales, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Kadle and County Manager Julie Morgas Baca will serve as pall bearers for the service. The cremains of 116 unclaimed and indigent residents will be interred.

“We are pleased to offer dignity and honor to each person being buried,” says Bernalillo County Commission Chair Art De La Cruz. “We don’t know the circumstances that brought them here, what hardships they may have encountered, and to be quite honest, it really isn’t important, because we are here as a community to honor them as part of our Bernalillo County community.”

The Bernalillo County General Services Division administers the Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program for deceased persons who have passed away within the geographical boundaries of Bernalillo County.

The county contracts with a local mortuary to cremate and store the cremains of unclaimed/indigent persons for two years and then the cremains are made available for burial.

It is the mission of the Bernalillo County General Services Division to provide a deserved, lawful, proper and dignified manner of disposition for those decedent residents who are indigent or go unclaimed upon death, and to handle every case accurately and lawfully with the utmost attention. Bernalillo County respects each individual in the community and will treat all with maximum regard and dignity.

For more information on the unclaimed/indigent program, go to  www.bernco.gov/Unclaimed_Indigent_Cremation_Program.
