Subject: Water Authority to Start Construction on north side of Central Avenue between Carlisle and Wellesley next week

Clean false false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Hello everyone:

We hand-delivered flyers to all of the affected businesses yesterday, but I also wanted all of you to be aware of this construction.  This is not part of ART. The Water Authority needs to do it now so that we can rehabilitate a very old (1950s) water line and avoid tearing up new sidewalk that will be installed as part of ART. Construction is scheduled to last about three weeks, and none of the businesses will be out of water during construction.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns.  Thank you!

Crews to Lay New Water Line on North Side of Central Between Carlisle and Wellesley

Work is being done now so that the Water Authority will not have to tear up new sidewalk

NOTE: All construction is weather permitting and subject to change without notice.

The Water Authority will lay a new water line on the north side of Central, starting at Carlisle and heading west to Wellesley, beginning Monday, Jan. 30 and lasting through about Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. The work is being done now so that the Water Authority will not have to tear up new sidewalk that is being installed as part of the ART (Albuquerque Rapid Transit) Project. During this work, westbound traffic on Central will be reduced to one lane between Carlisle and Wellesley, with the lane nearest to the sidewalk closed and NO on-street parking. NM Underground is the contractor, and regular work hours will be Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-5 p.m., although the contractor may work on Saturdays or longer hours if needed. Additional work is planned to start soon on the north side of Central between Girard and Dartmouth.

ACCESS WILL BE MAINTAINED TO ALL BUSINESSES. Businesses will be notified in advance of any planned water shutoffs. A shoe-fly system is being put in place to ensure businesses have water throughout construction. The contractor will coordinate the shoe-fly (and a brief water shutoff of about 15 minutes) with each affected business.

About the Project

Old water lines are being “abandoned in place” when possible to minimize the impact on area residents and businesses. Any abandoned lines will be filled in for safety. The Water Authority is paying for this construction from its capital budget for replacement of aging infrastructure. Depending on costs, it may have to issue bonds, but this is a normal practice for capital projects and no rate increases associated with ART are planned at this time. The Water Authority is going through the normal process to have our work and traffic control permitted with the City of Albuquerque. No building permits are required. For more information about ART: call 398-4ART (398-4278) or visit www.brtabq.com.
