I think it is a good faith effort and MRWM and Amy Coburn are good people. They have done a lot of work for the University. I ended up filling up the comments areas with my thoughts, which are just that we need a bike entrance at that spot and shade for the walkway. I'm glad they are looking to remove the old busstop/shelter cast concrete thing. I'm just not sure they've arrived at the right solution there. Its also a bit tough, since really, the parking lot behind is a bad use for a major corner of the University at a major crossroads of the town. I'd rather see buildings and art galleries/performance spaces and an entrance to Johnson Field along that strip of Central.

The survey questions were mostly forced choice. There was no option for "none of the above". The designers of the survey will learn much less than they could have from the results. Carolina

Gary,

The first question in the survey is what "best describes your relationship to UNM". Well, I'm faculty and neighbor, but I only get one choice. I chose faculty. Since I'm self-quarantined at home and teaching courses online, UNM the employer is far more real to me than UNM the neighbor - at least right now.

What I found out by going back in is that, had I chosen neighbor, I would have been asked my neighborhood. I don't know whether it's strategically better to be an employee or a Nob Hill resident. Hmmm.

Thank you, Carolina, for your thoughtful ideas.

You may have already done this but I would like to encourage you and other neighbors who would like to weigh in to go to the Central and Girard Site Improvement Survey link below and express your ideas.

I took the survey. One can weigh in on the particular proposals and, at the end, express overall ideas about where the project should rank in the university’s investment/budget plans.

Thanks for your faithful contribution to neighborhood dialogue.

Hey Gary: These ideas look beautiful. However, given the current financial situation at UNM and everywhere, this site design does not seem like top priority for spending the U's limited cash. Students are struggling, staff may be laid off, etc. I'd prefer that the money be spent on more urgent issues. Carolina

Dear Neighbors,

UNM Planning, Design & Construction would like to gain feedback from the community on proposed site improvements for UNM Main Campus at the corner of Central and Girard.

The Albuquerque design firm, MRWM Landscape Architects, has proposed three initial design concepts (attached) for the Central and Girard area of campus using the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). The Central and Girard Site Improvement Survey will be available through Friday, April 10.

Please feel free to forward this survey to others in your communities.

After the design input is collected from UNM stakeholders, this project will be refined and put through the UNM capital project approval process with the UNM Board of Regents, the Higher Education Department (HED) and the State Board of Finance (SBOF.)

We are happy to bring forward solutions that will increase the security and safety of our beautiful campus for our students, staff, visitors and our neighbors. Because design proposals take on life when our community participates in their development, I invite all to complete this survey and provide feedback on the proposed concepts.

Sincerely,

Amy Coburn
