Hi Gary:

Perhaps it's best to allow Andrew and Ashley to work through the issues they are facing at High & Dry for now. We have clear directions based on the conditional use approval that they need to abide by at Public House. I also have faith that they will honor their agreements with the Neighborhood Association.

I have it in mind to reach out to the proprietors of the 201 Hermosa NE location, establish lines of communication, review the conditions the ZHE placed on their conditional use approval and offers they made during the conditional use discussion.

Perhaps a couple neighbors on the block would like to join?

Any other items of discussion?

Hi Mark:

Thanks for your suggestions. I will certainly take them to heart as Public House begins its operation. I wouldn't recommend labeling the statements from Nextdoor as slanderous as much as a warning to us on Hermosa, however. I sense in their commentary a high level of frustration from repeated incidents occurring in their vicinity. I guarantee you that I will work with Ashley and Andrew to reduce such incidents as much as I am able. I feel confident that they will reciprocate.

I, too, immediately read this as slanderous. I’ll simply add, if anyone observes an obviously “very drunk” patron exiting an establishment, the proper place to report that is to the Liquor Control Board. If that person gets behind a wheel, also call #dwi.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Stephen,

That is a great reminder. We really can only rely on police reports to illuminate the most egregious incidents, and even then it will be an incomplete sample.

And of course we really cannot/should not expect business owners to disclose anything beyond what is asked of them (assuming I understand the mechanics of the process). I suppose that leads me back to us and our job to continually maintain a strong and healthy dialogue with businesses and other neighbors.

Maybe a board member can chime in with a helpful list of resources and the best practices for establishing these conversations when an individual and direct effort is neither practical nor appropriate. (E.g. I would like a clearer explanation of what exactly ECHO is and how we as neighbors are served by it).

Best,

Drew

Hi Drew:

I appreciate your viewpoint and agree with the often unneighborly behavior on the Nextdoor app. I copied the Nextoor post as a reminder that not all minor incidents are reported to the police or to the owners of the establishment. As part of the conditional use neighborhood meetings for Public House, police reports were used as evidence that High & Dry was a good neighbor, but it is possible that some incidents remain below the radar of the owners, the regular patrons, and the police.

I guarantee you that I will not post complaints regarding Public House on Nextdoor, and will indeed work with the owners to reduce or prevent incidents such as the ones described in the Nextdoor post. It is, however, unrealistic to assume that there will be no incidents occurring at Public House, despite the best efforts of the establishment's owners and employees. Incidents will happen. Despite this, Public House will be a benefit to the neighborhood and I have faith that they will make every attempt to be a good neighbor to us all.

Hello,

With the utmost sincerity and setting aside both the desperate/grasping tone of that particular post and the often ironically unneighborly behavior of the NextDoor app, I’m just not at all interested in heresay and unproductive one-way conversations.

What I think we all would enjoy more is a posted response from the owners of H&D to some unsubstantiated claims that they are likely unaware of. None of this really makes much sense— a lack of parking signage all around? No evidence of a camera system? When and how was this promised, to whom and in what way?  Both of those items would be very cheap and easy to solve either way.

Have you considered getting in contact with them to ask about this?  Everything shown to us thus far is that these owners are communicative. That would be something of great value to share with us neighbors.

It is my hope that you take that opportunity to walk across the street, shake hands and speak, or at least drop them an email and let us know what you learn!

Last, as your neighbor, know that I 100% back you and your right to a safe place to call home.

Best regards,

Drew

Hello supports of Public House:

This is a reminder about the promises that Public House owners made to us, especially about what good neighbors they are at High and Dry. I saw the post below on the Nextdoor app and felt that I should share it with my neighbors. I live directly across the street from the future Public House and will be affected by this type of behavior. I expect we will see the same behavior from patrons of Public House after being open for a year or so.

Drunk High and Dry Patrons disturbing neighborhood and Broken Promises On quite a few occasions now, when we were at Learners Chess in the evening to pack up for our Chess in the Parks event the following day, we have been accosted by drunk High and Dry patrons who use our private driveway space for their parking. On one occasion a very drunk man got in his truck and drove away after exclaiming he could park wherever he wants. On another occasion, when we asked a young woman to not park in our space, she got her boyfriend to come yell at us and threaten us. It was very frightening. We are so disappointed in High and Dry. They have broken so many promises that they made our neighborhood association when they first moved in. We were hopeful that their business would be an asset to the neighborhood, but it has only been a nuisance. They promised to stay closed Mondays and Tuesdays. They are now open every single day. They promised to put up signs in the alley to prevent parking in the alley. They now require their food trucks to park their trucks and their employees' cars in the alley. They promised to set up video cameras to monitor crime in the area. There have been multiple crimes and they have no video cameras. They promised not to over serve their patrons but on multiple occasions we have personally witnessed very drunk and stumbling patrons get in their cars and drive away. This business is not a good neighbor and not at all an asset for our neighborhood.

Friends and Neighbors.

The hearing examiner approved the request for conditional use as you can read on the attached notice of decision.

He attached several of our conditions.

I would expect the applicant to apply for a liquor license for the taproom/tasting room in the future.

When we receive that we will put it out to you using this email list.

Kind regards,
