Oops, quick add-on,
All the trees I have on drip have multiple drippers, and, yes, including out near the drip line.
Also, if you want to be absolutely certain the water goes through the fabric, you could cut a hole where each dripper is, or use the gadgets the drip systems sell that poke into the ground - they make a space for the dripper below ground level.
I've also been told that trees do not like rock, but that a layer of mulch under the fabric can help (I imagine other plants that can keep the area cool would be good, too).
Whatever method you use, a big THANK YOU! to all who take good care of their trees!!!
Hi all,
A couple ideas to add ~
A soaker hose, drip system or drip line can deliver a steady, slow flow of water that can go through the fabric (nothing would go through plastic - never put plastic where you want anything to grow!). I've been using a drip system for my trees and shrubs that have fabric around them for years ~ I run the system for 2 or 3 hours once a week (every 5 days when the temps go above 90) and, according to Baca's, my trees are quite happy. These are established trees.
Sharing this to show that water will go through fabric if it is delivered slowly enough - and you let that drip go long enough to go down into the ground. Also, any drip line, etc. will enhance one's ability and "will" for regular watering. Moving a hose multiple times, three times a week is a lot of work (and way more run off)!
I use a compost thermometer to check water depth on the trees I have that do not have fabric around them. I originally bought it to use as a compost thermometer, but it works so well for water depth! I push it in as far as it will go (not pushing on the thermometer, of course, just holding the metal) and measure when I pull it out. Any long metal rod, with a very small diameter and a point on the end would work :)

It indicates that young trees need a lot more care than most of us understand.
I imagine much of the advice applies to trees of any age.

SUMMER TREE CARE
- Please water your young trees 3 times per week, low and slow to a depth of 18-24". Move the hose around the tree to several locations. Newly planted Trees need to be watered consistently for at least 3 years!
- Add more mulch to keep the roots cool.
- Pull back weed barrier to allow water to penetrate down to the roots (5ft from the tree is recommended).
- Remove the stakes if your tree is a year old.
- Never use weed killer near your trees!
