Great idea to have a meeting specially for this. Thanks Gary.

I would like to attend the meeting and learn what I can do to mitigate this problem.

Could we invite our new district 6 commissioner, Nicole Rogers? I have spoken to cops at "cops and coffee" recently
and they expressed that their hands are tied.

Could we invite city pros who work with drug addicted and mental cases?

Thanks much,
Sally

Friends and Neighbors,
This thread makes it clear the topic is of great concern.
Your board meets this Tuesday, Feb. 6. I am attaching the agenda as it stands today. All are welcome.

I propose adding an item to the effect of: Should NHNA set up an evening event (like the one last week on Public Safety) to explore homeless issues in Nob Hill? If so who should we invite for a panel?
Tuesday night would not be the event itself but the time to decide if we want to organize an event, what to call it, who to invite.
Is this the right question?
Would you participate?
Who should we invite?

The problem with the homeless problem is that it's not one problem with a "one size fits all" solution.

The homeless population includes --
-- folks working multiple jobs just to get by who get a rent increase they can't afford
-- working folks who are uninsured who get sick and then have major medical bills and/or lose their job
-- working folks who have their job eliminated if their employer closes or moves elsewhere
-- good folks who were injured and got addicted to painkillers (thank you Sackler scum)
-- folks who are addicted otherwise
-- mentally ill folks
-- others I've probably missed

We need different solutions for different situations.

We also can't expect the police to do everything.  We ask them to catch thieves and murders, be marriage and drug counselors, write traffic tickets, and many other things.  Lots of very different skill sets there.

Should we allow tent cities to pop up anywhere -- no.  But let's not demonize an entire group due to the actions of a few.

Less snark, please.

Thank you Robert and Dennis, but let's keep things realistic we don't need emails speaking in platitudes.   The people whose homes surround this tent have lost value in their homes and have to worry about security.  No one will want to buy or rent a home where a tent is in their back alley.  Especially women and families with children.

But I have a solution.  Rob and Dennis, what's your addresses?  I'll tell the person in the tent that he can live and poop and pee in your yard.  I'm serious.  And when they start screaming at you, cursing you out, starting a fire that could destroy your property, breaking into your home, please provide an update on how things are going.

Yes, we all want to help homeless people, but "poor luck?" Can we please stop absolving many of these people of ANY responsibility for how they got where they are?  It's one bad choice after another (I'm not speaking of the mentally ill, we should absolutely help those people).

We absolutely need more decent police officers and I am so very thankful for the decent ones that do their best in a very difficult job.

Here's what I do not see.  I do not see WHO on the Nob Hill board is responsible for walking around our neighborhood and noting these violations and reporting them to 311.  Who is that person?  Do they need help?  My wife and I are offering.

Thank you,

Thanks for your response Robert. It is a complex problem that seems to have no easy solution. In your first paragraph, you reference our “war based city,” part of the military industrial complex. There is a high  concentration of very smart folks at Sandia Lab and other military facilities, whose engineering expertise might be redirected to the issue of homelessness as a national security issue. Knowledge, wisdom and compassion are needed to help solve this growing national problem. Thanks again for redirecting our thoughts from simple knee jerk reactions to a search for real solutions.

I would hope that people in our community realize that the Wall Street economy and war based city we live in does not work for everyone, especially those with poor luck and disabilities.  Reports of economic recovery only refers to the upper classes and high-tech income levels.  For most of us it has no real bearing, for some it means more problems.

I would like to see our community put pressure on the city for some extra special outreach with help for the people who might be living in tents in alleys instead of calling for police actions.  As we have seen this does not solve the problem of the class divide around us.  As you know from reports in the paper tearing down the tents only makes the un-housed move to someplace else.

What our community needs is more help for the un-housed, not more cops.  The city needs to admit this is a problem that is going to be with us awhile and open more on location centers to reach out to these people and help them with whatever they need, right here in Nob Hill.

The present solution is to trash the tents, a home to some, take their personal property, and ship people out to an old jail by Double Eagle Airport.  Would you want to go a place like that?  You know, out of sight-out of mind.  That plan has been a failure.  People who want a little dignity and care don’t want to be put in old prison by a sewage treatment plant. The Lovelace facility on Gibson is an attempt but is not large enough nor targeted for the seriously unhoused population who are all over the city.

A good place to start would be to contact with a positive plan would be our city councilor and the mayor.

All very good points. Thanks for the dialogue.

As you see in the thread below we had a good discussion with APD CMDR Ray Del Greco this week. 40 neighbors participated.

One of our directors, Daniel Carlos, is energizing our Public Safety Committee.

You will see an announcement from him in the next couple weeks about a meeting of his committee.

PLEASE, all neighbors,  come out and give him a hand with this important work!

Hello Neighbors,

Thank you John for pointing this out.  My wife and I are growing increasingly concerned that our neighborhood is not prepared to combat homeless people or people who want to park and live out of their vans on our Nob Hill streets as if it was a campground.  We need to pay attention to this issue, because a nightmare happened to our friends in Portland who bought a beautiful home in a neighborhood like ours.  There is not anyone who wants a camper van (usually a piece of garbage) parked in front of their home where the occupants empty their poop and pee on the street.  This happened to our friends and they lost hundreds of thousands on their home when they finally had to move.  We are in SW Nob Hill  and we are noticing camper vans in driveways and on the streets, and I'm sorry, but no commercial vehicle or camping van/trailer should be parked in anyone's driveway and definitely not on the street.  I'm watching as other associations in other cities make rules regarding this a!
nd I think we should also.  Homeless people living in their vans on our streets should be a real concern also and let's not wait until it's a real problem and then it's too difficult to fix.  All huge RV's and camper vans on streets and parked in front yards do is bring down our property values.  And trust our friends from Portland, once it gets out of hand, and this can happen very quickly, it's difficult to fix.  Get those homeless people out of Wellesley and Silver now.  Contact that owner and get them out of there and if he/she doesn't respond, call the city.  Next they will stop living outside and start occupying houses for sale, houses where there is a seasonal owner.  There is no embellishment here, this could easily happen here if we do not get on top of this issue.

Sincerely,

Mike

I was out of town over much of the holidays and My neighbor just contacted me about a homeless encampment on the property on Silver and Wellesley. Currently owned by Mr. Earnest Cohen and supposedly managed by Consensus Planning INC. My concern is to how that property is being managed if the encampment was allowed to be set up there in the first place. It doesn't speak very well for the current owner as to his concerns for the neighborhood. I hadn't read any news about this situation from other neighbors so am writing this to see if anyone has any information. Thanks. John Alberty

All very good points. Thanks for the dialogue.

As you see in the thread below we had a good discussion with APD CMDR Ray Del Greco this week. 40 neighbors participated.

Hello Neighbors,?

?

Thank you John for pointing this out.? My wife and I are growing increasingly concerned that our neighborhood is not prepared to combat homeless people or people?who want to park and live out of their vans on our Nob Hill streets as if it was a campground.? We need to pay attention to this issue, because a nightmare happened to our friends in Portland who bought a beautiful home in a neighborhood like ours.? There is not anyone who wants a camper van (usually a piece of garbage) parked in front of their home where the occupants?empty their poop and pee on the street.? This happened to our friends and they lost hundreds of thousands?on their home when they finally had to move.? We are in SW Nob Hill ?and we are noticing camper vans in driveways and on the streets, and I'm sorry, but no commercial vehicle or camping van/trailer should be parked in anyone's driveway and definitely not on the street.? I'm watching as other?associations in other cities make rules regarding this a!
nd I think we should also.? Homeless people living in their vans on our streets should be a real concern also and let's not wait until it's a real problem and then it's too difficult to fix.? All huge RV's and camper vans on streets and parked in front yards do is bring down our property values.? And trust our friends from Portland, once it gets out of hand, and this can happen very quickly, it's difficult to fix.? Get those homeless people out of Wellesley and Silver now.? Contact that owner and get them out of there and if he/she doesn't respond, call the city.? Next they will stop living outside and start occupying houses for sale, houses where there is a seasonal owner.? There is no embellishment here, this could easily happen here if we do not get on top of this issue.?

?

Sincerely,?

?
