I was able to attend the meet and greet event hosted by Councilor Rogers at Flying Star on Thursday evening July 11th. 
There were about 20 people present including the Councilor and her staff. Introductions by the attendees identified them as a mixture of residents and business owners from several of the different neighborhoods in the district to include Nob Hill. 
The majority of the approximately 90 minute conversation centered around the issues of crime and homelessness in Council district 6. 
Councilor Rogers expressed a frustration with the Keller administration not being able to provide her with a timeline for when the Gateway center would be fully operational or when the Westside Emergency center would have a contract in place for a management company to operate the facility for the fiscal year that began July 1.
Both facilities have received funding from City Council.
She recommended that concerned citizens contact the Mayor's office regarding both facilities as well as to attend upcoming city council meetings and sign up for public comment. 
Councilor Rogers stated that she has reached out to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and the NM State Police department to proactively patrol her council district as she does not feel that the Mayor and Chief of Police in Albuquerque have been responsive to her requests.
She specifically mentioned that Bernalillo County Sheriff Allen had agreed to assign Deputies to patrol the area around San Pedro and Central Blvd SE but did not identify any Nob Hill neighborhood areas that would addressed.
She further highlighted some infrastructure changes such as lighting and fencing material which is being installed in the alleyways of the International District in an effort to thwart some of the ongoing crime in those locations. 
She concluded the meeting by inviting people to call/email her and her staff about issues of concern.

No one has the solutions to the multiple kinds of homelessness. The Finns have been statistically the most successful, and their stratategy is housing first and foremost for the reasons you suggest.

Something I haven't seen brought up some of the difficulties in "getting yourself out of this situation" Can't get an ID/license without a perm address. Can't open a bank account with out an ID. Can't start a job without an ID. Can't look for a job let alone interview one if you have no where to keep your stuff, which is all you have left. There are many more institutional injustices and prejudices that need addressed too. Care kits are great but only one piece of the puzzle.

Homeless isn't a category of people, it's a situation different types of people are in for different reasons, some by choice.  Addiction, mental illness, unemployed/low to no income, bad luck, etc.  We need to pressure city leadership a lot harder to find more effective solutions.  Personally speaking, I'd replace current city leadership, they are ineffective in this area and have been for a long time.

They don't have friends and family because many have stolen from them for years and their family and friends are exasperated trying to help them and have smartly told them to get out of their lives. So what if the West Side Shelter is next to a sewage plant?  Beggars can't be choosers.  And if it's that bad, then that should be motivation to lift yourself up with all the services we are providing them and get out of that situation.  It's better than having them in our neighborhoods dragging them down with theft, drug paraphernalia, frightening anyone just wanting to walk on Central and spend money at restaurants.  We had friends in town last week and we went to Little Bear Coffee but left because the homeless person in front of us stunk so bad of pee and poop, that it wasn't worth standing there waiting for a coffee.  So that business gave out a free coffee to that person and lost about $50 worth of business.  Brilliant.  

 

And our friends on Amherst told us that two days ago a homeless person walked into this woman's yard (via the front gate) and went out her back gate looking for things to steal.  You want to go into your backyard and come upon someone on meth?  You want kids to step into their backyard and come across this person?  We don't.  They will live where the shelters are.  It's ridiculous that they or anyone else would complain about where we put them.  "No, I don't want to go to the West Side Shelter, that's far away from where I steal and get my drugs, I wanna be near Nob Hill or you're being cruel to me."  Nonsense.  

 

The former homeless I encountered all say the same thing - it was so hard to be homeless that they did whatever they had to do to get out of that situation (one I know went on to run a very successful bakery).  If they want to get out of that miserable life they can and we're here to help, but many need to recognize that we are all just trying to survive and we should not have to pay for their constant bad choices in life.

 Not only are car and home doors being tested, but I find it very disturbing that they are wandering into yards and taking whatever is not bolted down.

Hello neighbors, 

 

Just another point of view about the homeless issue from Meta Hirschl's below.  Not all of us support the homeless in the same way.  My wife and I support those that help themselves.  I've worked with and around homeless for years.  There are more than a few who are more than happy to be right where they are.  How do I know?  I've tried to coax them into being helped and they simply don't want it.  It's terribly sad but the way it is for many of them. 


We certainly won't partake in anything that brings homeless people closer to Nob Hill, it's already bad enough.  Did you not see the recent video from Nob Hill where around 3:30 a.m., they are walking around and testing all our car doors?  You want them testing your side doors?  Your backyard?  

 

Not all of us want to encourage a Nob Hill overrun with homeless people near our homes and businesses where more shops close, more homes don't sell, more small businesses do not come because the crime is so bad so no one goes to their store or restaurant?  How about when you're going out to dinner at a great place like Mesa Provisions and a screaming maniac is on Carlisle and Central and everyone and a couple with children had to carefully walk around him.  You want more of that?  We already have some crappy RV's parking in our neighborhood and more than a few tents.  I feel like some of you don't have friends in Portland, Oakland or Denver.  I feel like some of you are not media savvy and not watching the stories of good people who love their homes (and poured their life savings into it) and are having the home and quality of life ruined by homeless encampments near them.  Our poor friends in the International District will tell you, the city let them be overrun and now good luck selling your home if you want to get away from the crazy.  They are stuck down there and I feel terrible for them. 

 

We support raising our taxes to help people who don't have homes.  We support housing those who want it in a building NOT near a residential area or an area with small businesses (think barracks, one for men one for women).  Just letting them sit on the deck of Ihatov with their naked dirty ass out (about a month ago), is not what this neighborhood needs.  Compassion can also come with personal responsibility and making sure that the quality of life for the good people of Albuquerque does not get ruined by letting homeless do whatever they please in our beautiful neighborhood, especially if we offer help and they do not want it.

Nob Hill was given this piece of public art in 2016 in celebration of our
100th birthday.

Artist John Davis created his sculpture at Campus Blvd and Wellesley Dr NE
under the auspices of CABQ's public art program.

When we accepted it we agreed to maintain the area around it. 

It's now weed season and we need to step up.



Could you help occasionally?

You don't need to sign up. Just stop by when you can and contribute a few
minutes.

For the thorny weeds you will want gloves. For some a small hoe.

Nob Hill Neighborhood Association Supports the Unhoused

Baratunde Thurston?s podcast, How To Citizen, reminds us that citizenship
is an action, not just a status. Beyond voting, we must work, volunteer,
and contribute to our community and democracy. Each day, we should ask
ourselves, "What can I do to make our lives better? What is my role as a
citizen?"

On May 1st, neighbors from the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association (NHNA)
gathered to explore how we could actively ?citizen.? We met with community
organizations supporting the unhoused, including representatives from
Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS), UNM Echo, the City, and City Councilor
Nicole Rogers.

Our goal was to find hands-on work to alleviate the suffering and despair
we witness on our neighborhood streets. Here?s what we decided:

Our Immediate Action

We were encouraged to contact the City Council to support funding for ACS.
We sent emails and letters to City Councilors, and attended meetings, both
in person and remotely, to voice our support. Notably, Nob Hill resident
Pat Hirschl, 91 years young, spoke to the City Council in support of ACS
funding on May 20th.

The City Council voted to support ACS, with members acknowledging the
numerous emails and phone calls they received in support. Thank you, NHNA!


Our Longer Term Action

The ACS Division Manager Walter Adams and his team suggested that hygiene
kits with basic personal supplies are crucial for the unhoused, and they
currently lack enough of them. Rev. Dr. Dawn Rosignol, pastor of Monte
Vista Christian Church, has experience assembling hygiene kits through
their youth program. Rev. Dawn and Meta Hirschl are co-leading this effort.


We decided to host events to assemble hygiene kits for ACS to distribute,
and for neighbors to distribute directly. The kits include items such as
sunscreen, chapstick/lip gloss with sunscreen, toiletries, tampons/pads,
socks, tuna fish pouches, fruit cups, and a note of encouragement.


Additionally, we were invited to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the new ACS
building, which all residents of Albuquerque were invited to attend.



In front of the new ACS building: ACS staff Jenny Carian, and neighbors Pat
Hirschl and Bob Davis.


Here is more about Jenny:


Jenny grew up in Zuni Pueblo and holds a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare
Administration. She worked for five years as a Certified Nursing Assistant
before spending over 10 years in healthcare administration, primarily at
Presbyterian Hospital. Jenny comes to ACS from Ambercare Hospice where she
was the We Honor Veterans Coordinator.

informed response to behavioral and mental health 911 calls.

Response are personalized ot that of the individual, family, and community
so that ACS can bring ?The Right Response at the Right Time?

appropriate response.?

   ACS is a national leader in alternative public safety responses, serving
   our community?s most vulnerable.

   In just over two and a half years, ACS has handled over 67,000 service
   calls, with 80% diverted from police, showcasing effective community-based
   safety interventions.

   Other cities look to ACS as a model for developing similar programs.


Another longer term goal the group discussed was to promote the building
of  Accessory Dwelling Units
