Good afternoon, Ms. Montoya. Please confirm receipt of this statement of position from Nob Hill Neighborhood Association.
Kind regards, Gary Eyster
Dear Mr. Chavez,
Thank you for the opportunity to weigh in on this request. Our community faces rapid change and individuals are eager to exercise their privilege to have a voice in our future.
We maintain an email listserve where we invited comments on the application from our community. The result of this process was 8 in support, 18 in opposition. We do not develop official positions with this listserve but use it to gather ideas and sentiment of the community. Concepts that arose in that process and other deliberations can be characterized thus:
Notable arguments in support:
"From what I can ascertain from the request, what they're planning doesn't sound like the other location, Library Bar."
"Empty storefronts drag down all businesses. I’m partial to having a business and not a vacant building."
"I want an entertainment district that's vibrant with options that will bring a variety of patrons."
"The murder at the Imbibe was terrible. But it should not disallow a new business from moving into the space."
Notable arguments in opposition:
"The elephant in the room is the applicants operate the Library Bar, 312 Central Ave. SW. It has speakers on the street and operates ‘til early morning. We have little to gauge these owners by except what they’re already doing. The community needs assurance that this operation will not be like the Library Bar. We need guardrails on hours of operation. If the transfer is approved the operators will have carte blanche to operate as they wish, not just what they discuss in the application."
"We don’t want to become downtown. A downtown property owner has said in the ABQ Journal he wishes downtown could become a destination rather than a dangerous place people avoid."
"Teens from throughout the city are well familiar with Nob Hill. They’ve all hung out there. Families want to come to Nob Hill. You don’t see families downtown at night. Businesses and neighbors thrive on safety. This transfer will not draw families to our commercial district or make it safer."
"There have been 75 calls for service year-to-date at 312 Central Ave. SW. Some are just because something happened outside the Library, not inside. But that volume of calls indicates the environment in and near the Library is dangerous to public health and safety."
Our association held a special meeting of the board of directors by zoom. The following statement of position carried 3-0.
With the information we have our association asserts that the transfer could very likely be detrimental to the public health and safety of the residents of the City. We express strong reservations and, therefore, opposition to the transfer unless a preponderance of our arguments in opposition can be addressed.
Kind regards,
Gary L. Eyster
