Though I’ve only rarely used it, I do not find the back-in parking to be harder to use than parallel parking (the way it was and is now being suggested). I did find it a bit of a surprise the first time I encountered it and spent a few heartbeats trying to figure out what the traffic folks wanted me to do. I suppose others do too.

Are many people still first encountering it or never quite figuring it out? Has the slowed-down traffic surrounding it been a problem for the pedestrians crossing the street to use the larger parking lot just south of it? Or is the problem with folks driving cars and not expecting to be driving on a slowed-down pedestrian friendly bicycle boulevard marked street?

For those of you who don't approve of back in parking, here are reasons to maintain its existence:

Back-in angle parking, also known as reverse angle parking, is a parking technique that involves backing into an angled parking space instead of pulling forward. It's considered a safer alternative to parallel and front-in angle parking. Here are some benefits of back-in angle parking:

  • Improved visibility: Drivers have a clear view of traffic when exiting the space, and can merge directly into traffic.
  • Safer for pedestrians and cyclists: Drivers have a direct line of sight to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Safer for loading and unloading: Car trunks are close to the sidewalk, outside of the roadway.
  • More parking spaces: Back-in angle parking allows for more parking spaces than traditional parallel parking.
