My suggestion is to feed hummers more naturally by planting red and dark pink flowers — red yucca, gaura, desert honeysuckle, hyssop and others. My planter boxes containing these flowers were constantly visited all last summer. The flowers bloom throughout the season into early fall and don’t get moldy or dirty or empty out like plastic feeders.

The Audubon Society recommends avoiding the red dye.
So take these sources as you will, but it might be safer for the hummers to switch back to refined white sugar.
