Rapid response strategies are designed to initiate actions that yield significant and tangible impacts in a remarkably short timeframe. The lessons learned from the tumultuous experience of the pandemic have greatly shaped our understanding. We found that the ability to pivot—adapt swiftly and effectively—has been a powerful method for reaching underserved communities when timely, critical information is essential for mitigating negative health outcomes.
Today, we face a distinct yet equally urgent crisis, stemming from shifts in federal policies that are profoundly affecting immigrant communities in ways we have never witnessed before. The need to adapt our strategies is more urgent than ever, as community health providers have voiced a compelling demand for information and resources specifically tailored to address immigration-related concerns.
In this pivotal moment, the City of Albuquerque stands at the forefront, joined by the County, the State, UNM Hospital, Albuquerque Public Schools, and a coalition of nonprofit organizations. Together, we have both the opportunity and a profound moral obligation to proactively engage with and educate our community.
The path forward is clear: we can enhance our capacity by empowering trusted community leaders and conveners. This can be achieved by equipping them with comprehensive training and essential resources to support themselves, their patients, and their clients effectively. By harnessing information sharing as a pivotal system of prevention, we can significantly mitigate the adverse impacts of federal policies on our healthcare providers. This will empower them with a versatile toolkit they can utilize whenever they engage with the community, fostering resilience and informed action during these challenging times.
