Hello Skiers,

This is a reminder that we will be working on trails in the Jemez Mountains tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 29.

See the details below.

So far, we have a total of two Ski Club members going.

We may be walking in a few inches of snow. The weather is predicted to be sunny.

Please let me know if you plan to go.

On Sunday, Nov. 29, we will remove two down trees on trails near the highway and then drive to Corral Canyon Trailhead and try to find the Calzada Trail route and remove trees. I am scheduling this outing on Sunday, because the forecast is for sunny weather and warmer temperatures than on Saturday. Also, snow is forecast for Saturday.

  1. Burn Trail – From Los Griegos parking area, we will hike across the highway and hike on Burn Trail only about 5 minutes to a 10-inch tree across the trail.
  2. New Thinning Road – This road is about one-half mile east of the Los Griegos parking area and on the south side of the highway where thinning was done last winter. We sometimes park on the wide shoulder here and ski the new road to Elk Ridge Trail and up to Griegos Junction. A 10-inch tree has fallen on the Thinning Road just beyond the wire gate.
  3. Calzada Trail – We will drive to Corral Canyon parking area and hike in a quarter-mile and turn up the hill to find the start of Calzada Trail where it enters the former forest. We have not maintained this trail for a few years due to the many trees falling on it that were killed in the Las Conchas Fire. We will attempt to find the route and remove down trees to learn how much effort will be required to clear this trail. It is no longer shaded by live conifer trees and gets icy due to the afternoon sun. Skiing it in fresh show should be very enjoyable.

Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target store at the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte. Wear warm clothes and bring lunch, snacks, and drinks. We will be using chain saws; therefore, bring hearing and eye protection. I have hard hats to loan, if you do not have one. Also, bring a face mask and work gloves. Wear boots appropriate for a little snow.
