_______________________________________________Ralph, all--
I totally agree with you! If they had a better presence online, that would be one thing. I stand corrected though--you CAN enter the vestibule ( I said lobby) and pretty much get what you need. The one time I had a question and had to pound on the door, I had to yell the question through the closed door! LOL. Maps, no problem--vestibule--just don't have a question!

Subject: Re: [NMCCSC] Obtaining CC Ski maps at Tijeras Ranger StationTeri, all,the last time I was there, though it has been a few months, we were not allowed to enter the lobby. The closest we could get, after banging on the door when we could see that workers were inside, was the vestibule and we had to wait there until a Ranger came to answer our specific question. They aren't open on Saturdays, so you would have to go during "business hours" M-F.I've noticed wherever I've been (CO, UT, ID, AZ, NM,OR) during the Covid pandemic, USFS ranger stations are ALL closed to the Public. This all during the time that their supreme leaders (Sonny Perdue, trump) were denying that Covid was a real concern. I'm not criticizing the local workforce, they're just following directives to be closed. And I don't think they are closed due to the concern for the public, I think they're closed because it was a convenient excuse to deny the public access to the resources behind the doors. It could have been managed much differently, and fairly. And still could. Not a happy camper. On 12/08/2020 12:10 PM Teri SHELDAHL via NMCCSCeGroup <nmccscegroup@mailman.swcp.com> wrote:Yes to banging on the door but you might not need to. Subject: Re: [NMCCSC] Skiing from 10K S Trailhead, Sat., Dec. 5The Club newsletter that just came out features a map of the area. It’s on there! Also, you can get a free ski trail map at the Tijeras ranger station. You’ll have to bang on the door to get someone to talk to you.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, Michael Arndt and I skied about 3 miles RT in the area between 10K South Trailhead and Ellis Trailhead in the Sandia Mountains.
From 10K South Trailhead, we skied to the east and south until we came to the groomed trail “above” the parking lot. We skied west on an unmarked route parallel to the groomed trail to the next switchback in the Crest Highway. This route, known as Sam’s/Kerry’s Trail, continues up parallel to the highway to the first highway switchback below Ellis Trailhead. We then skied the groomed (rolled by the Sandia Nordic Ski Club) trail across the meadow (old road clearing) to an aspen grove that stops at a forest-covered cliff. We had lunch here and returned by the same route to the parking lot.
We had only about 7 inches of undisturbed snow (as Amy Mathis said earlier), and we hit several rocks. The temperature was about 37F all day. We only saw three other skiers.
The highway was clear and dry. The 10K parking lots were about half-full.
We need more snow, and some is forecast for Thursday and Friday.
A few photos are presented in the attached Word document.
