Fellow Snowgoers,

Here's a little elaboration on the subject. Last year we used the SWNDC groomed tracks to reach the Valles overlook and recorded a GPS track (attached).  Although it's only a shade over 4 miles round trip. It took awhile, because we skiied during the Thanksgiving holiday, before the SWNDC had removed a number of trees from the trails after an intense windstorm.

The entrance into the groomed area is just beyond the west end of the parking lot, and should be pretty obvious. It's a popular trail.  If Pajarito Ski Area is open, the parking lot at that end will likely be crowded, since it's adjacent to one of the lifts.

A second attachment (Quemazon Snowtel) shows a possible extension of the trip we took. The "Untitled Placemark" is the location of the Quemazon Snowtel site that some of us use to assess snow depth in the Jemez. We haven't taken that trail in winter, and it's not maintained as far as I know, so there may be deadfall. There's also a steep hill which will add ~150' of elevation. The trail can be further extended to the north to get to an overlook of both the Valles and Guaje Cyn, at a location locallly known as "Rosie's Point."

Happy Trails,

Hello Skiers,

The Southwest Nordic Ski Club in Los Alamos has a permit from the U. S. Forest Service to construct and maintain groomed cross country ski trails just north of Pajarito Ski Area.

Go the SWNDC Web site for a map of their trails and information about the club. A map of the trail system is given in the attached Word file.

To find the groomed trails, go the last parking lot below the Pajarito Ski Area lodge and continue a short distance up the canyon. On the left is the SWNSC shed for equipment and tools. To the right is a former USFS road that is a trail now leading to the groomed trails adjacent to the beautiful and very large meadow named Canada Bonita.
