I concur with Sam.  I skate skied about an hour on the Service Road and groomed trails.  Very hard-packed with crusty ice.  Next time I go up I’ll wear my BC classics with my makeshift skins I made for them to at least give a little control on climbs and descents.

Hello Skiers,

Michael Arndt and I “skied” about 3 hours on trails between 10K S TH and Ellis TH yesterday.

We found extremely hard crust in all the open areas and “skied” all day on skins. I had Black Diamond kicker skins, and Michael had special Fischer skins on Fischer skis. He had more glide than I had, but he also moved faster downhill on the crust. In  the trees we found softer snow.

Sandia Nordic Ski Club was grooming trails with their equipment, and the only loose snow that we found in the open areas was on the groomed trails.

We met a few snowshoers and a few skiers on the groomed trails. We saw no other skiers on the crust in the open areas.

The temperature was 24 F when we arrived at 10K S TH at 10 am.

Sam
