On Saturday, February 27, Michael Arndt and I will lead a Class I-II skiing outing to Los Griegos Mountain in the Jemez Mountains. Our destinations will Griegos Junction and Upper Road.

 

In order to ski a short cut to the upper part of Elk Ridge Trail, we will park 0.7 mile east of the regular Los Griegos parking area. We will park on the north shoulder of NM-4, cross the highway, and ski in on a logging road to the location where the powerline crosses Elk Ridge Trail. The highway shoulder here is usually plowed.

 

We will ski up the moderately steep Elk Ridge Trail to Ladera Trail that leads to Griegos Junction. If we have time and energy, we will attempt to ski the additional 0.5 mile to Upper Road. There may be too many down trees on the switchbacks and traverses. After returning to Griegos Junction, we will ski Lower Road to the SE and start down Big Pine Canyon that leads back to the powerline and the highway. We will be doing glade skiing in this canyon where there is no marked trail.

 

The round trip distance is about 4 miles, and the elevation change is 480 feet to Griegos Junction and 740 feet to Upper Road.

 

Snow is forecast for Thursday, but I do not know what the snow conditions will be Saturday. Bring a mask, MaxiGlide and skins. Skins are not required, but they may be helpful, depending on the snow conditions.

 

Meet at 7:45 a.m. on the west side of the Target parking lot at the intersection of I-25 North and Paseo del Norte. We can meet skiers who live north of Albuquerque at the Home Depot on US-550 west of Bernalillo. Meet us on the west side of the large parking lot and west of the shed display.

 

Bring lunch, snacks, and drinks. We will plan to return to Albuquerque before 6 p.m.
