Hello Skiers,

On Saturday, December 4, Sam Beard and Michael Arndt will lead an outing to maintain ski trails in the following locations on the Jemez Ranger District:

  1. Crater Spur Trail at Redondo Campground – This trail is located near Redondo Campground and goes past two craters caused by the interaction of ground water with super-hot magma. Steam is so rapidly formed that the forces blow rocks and earth from an area to form a crater. We pass one large crater and one small crater. The trail is mostly easy and is only about 1 mile long round-trip. We will be adding blue diamonds and removing a few trees across the trail. There is very little elevation change on this trail

  1. Calzada Trail South of NM-4 about one-half mile west of Valle Grande – After completing the Crater Trail work, we will drive a few miles to the Corral Canyon area and hike to the south on Calzada Trail on the mountain side east of Corral Canyon Trail. We worked on this trail last year, and we should not find too many trees down. This trail lies mostly in an area burned in 2011. The elevation change on this trail is about 600 feet, and the RT distance is 3 or 4 miles.

Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target store parking lot just north of a large white construction tent at the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte. We will plan to return to ABQ by 5 pm.

We will be using chain saws. Please bring work gloves, and eye and ear protection and a hard hat. I can provide hard hats fore a few volunteers. Wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and hiking boots with slip-resistant soles. It will be cool; therefore, bring a warm coat.

If you plan to ride with another driver, please bring $15 to cover gasoline and car expenses.

Please let me know if you plan to work or if you have questions. samgbeard@msn.com
