Hello Skiers,

On Saturday, January 8, Michael Arndt and Sam Beard will lead a Class I tour in the Redondo Campground area of the Jemez Mountains.

We will park at the large overlook parking area on NM-4 across the highway from the campground. We will ski into the CG entrance and follow an old loop road in the forest around the CG. The length is about 2 miles with very little elevation change. Usually, we return to the highway east of the CG and have lunch in a sunny spot.

After lunch, we will lead a tour on Crater Spur Trail that is 1 mile round trip with a little more elevation change than on the loop trail. We will see a couple of hydro-thermal explosion craters that were formed after the Banco Bonito eruption about 40,000 years ago. The explosions occurred when ground water met very hot magma under the cooled lava from the eruption.

Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target parking lot SE of the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte. Those who wish to may carpool with other skiers. You may want to wear a face mask when in a vehicle.

Bring skis with bindings, poles, and boots. Wear warm clothes and bring warm gloves. Bring snacks, drinks, and lunch. Also, bring MaxiGlide to put on the ski bottoms in the event that the temperatures are warm and the snow is sticky. We skied on 10 inches of fresh snow there last weekend.
