Skiers,
Passing along great info on the Klaus trail which runs just below the Ellis service road. When the service road gets icy from too much sun and wind, Klaus is a nice alternative that should have good snow for longer because it’s in the trees. And it’s groomed, so it’s wider than most of the trails in the Sandias.

Subject: [Sandia Nordic Ski Club] Klaus Trail Information
Hi Everyone,

As we wait for USFS to update the Sandia Crest trail map to include the Klaus trail, I wanted to provide some information on the trail for those who are interested.

The Klaus trail runs parallel to and east of the Service Road (which is the gravel road that runs between the red gate at the Ellis lot and the upper tram terminal).  The northern end of the Klaus trail branches off the Sandia Nordic groomed trails to the right.  To get to the northern end of Klaus from the Ellis lot, look just past the red gate where the grooming branches off the Service Road and heads east into the trees.  Follow the groomed trails to the Y where the lower groomed trails go to the left and the Klaus trail goes to the right.  The Klaus trail runs all the way south to our storage container, which is in the small clearing near the top of the downhill runs by the upper tram terminal.  Please note that the northern half of Klaus is appropriate for advanced beginner and novice skiers, whereas the southern half of the trail is more appropriate for advanced novice and expert skiers.  The Klaus trail crosses Rocky Point twice, once very near the northern end of the trail, and a second time on the southern half of the trail where Klaus makes an S turn.  Sandia Nordic has erected temporary directional signs, as well as caution signs marking hills, curves, and trail intersections.  If you are new to the trail, please use caution skiing it as you gain familiarity with the trail.  I am attaching a gps track of the trail that was made this past August, for your reference.

Hope this helps,

Scott
