A few of us skinned up the ski area this afternoon after avalanche beacon practice. Snow conditions are getting challenging, it’s pretty carved up and packed down with some crusty spots but still some nice powder in the trees.
The biggest challenge today was lack of parking at the ski area since the roadside isn’t plowed. We dug out a couple cars that got too far into the softer stuff. I think we need to start putting pressure on the Forest service to plow parking at *all* the trailheads. The ski area is also the trailhead for Challenge trail. People want to get out, they’re going to park even where there’s not much room. The current situation at the ski area is dangerous because you have to back out with some momentum into the downhill traffic lane.

The Ellis area was good. Switchback was fine, as were the Sandia Nordic Trails. A groomer was there today.
Parking was a challenge at Ellis. The tram was a good choice.

After a wonderful, 2' of fluffy stuff ski at Redondo Friday, I'd like to get out closer to home. If anyone skis Ellis today, please let me know if still decent for skiing. Also curious how much snow is at Oak Flats for potential snowshoeing out of the wind.
At least this cold should help preserve the snow. Thanks! Marcy Dorchester
