Hello Skiers,
On Sunday, January 29, Michael Arndt and I will lead a Class II (More Difficult) ski tour on Corral Canyon Trail in the Jemez Mountains.
From the trailhead on NM-4 about one-half mile west of Valle Grande, we ski up a long meadow and follow an old road to Junction Meadow. Here we turn east, cross Forest Road 280, and continue up the canyon
to Forest Road 282. We then ski to the west to a sunny meadow on a ridge where we can see the Sandia Mountains to the south. We then ski to the NE on the north side of the ridge to a switchback where we turn to the southwest and ski to the Tee Intersection
of two forest roads. We follow Forest Road 280 back to Junction Meadow. The return route from there will depend on snow conditions. We could ski down Calzada Trail or Forest Road 280.
The round-trip distance is about 4 miles, and the elevation change is about 750 feet.
Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target store parking lot southeast of the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte.
Bring ski equipment, warm gloves, sun glasses, sun screen, lunch, snacks, drinks, and MaxiGlide and wear warm clothes. MaxiGlide is applied to the skis to help prevent ice sticking to the bottoms of the skis.
Ice forms on the bottoms of skis when one skis through cold snow and then through warm melting snow. When enough snow and ice builds up on ski bottoms, the skis will not slide.
We will carpool, because there is plowed parking for only a few vehicles at the trailhead. We will arrive at the trailhead at about 10 am.
Please call or email me if you have questions.
