ICYMI.  The following statement from BCSO was posted on their social media account just before 4pm today.  Kerry

“Due to the current extreme weather conditions, NM 536, the road leading to the Crest, is temporarily closed. Additionally, the Sandia Tram will be shut down until March 14, 2024. These measures are crucial for the safety of our community and visitors.

The closure of NM 536 is due to impassable conditions caused by significant snow drifts, making it unsafe for both the public and emergency services. Despite the appeal of snow recreation, we must prioritize safety. Our resources have already been stretched thin by numerous high-risk rescues this season, and we are working diligently to prevent further emergencies.

Equally important is the temporary closure of the Sandia Tram. We want to specifically address those who often enjoy the La Luz Trail and Pino Trail, expecting to return via the Tram. Please be advised that the Tram is not operational until March 14 due to maintenance. The journey back on foot is extremely challenging and not advisable under current conditions. This is a crucial point for both novice and experienced snow enthusiasts to consider. While the thrill of adventure is understandable, it is often the more experienced individuals who find themselves in perilous situations due to the higher degree of risk involved in their activities.

The local ski areas are making efforts to open, which we anticipate will attract more visitors to the mountains. However, it's important to remember that both novice and experienced individuals can find themselves in danger. The abundance of snow, while enticing, can lead to challenging and dangerous conditions.

We urge everyone to take these closures seriously. Venturing into these areas without serious preparation and awareness of the current conditions can lead to difficult and life-threatening situations, potentially exhausting our search and rescue resources. Our team is committed to ensuring the safety of all who enjoy our beautiful mountains, but we need your cooperation and understanding. Your safety and the safety of our first responders is our highest priority.”
