Hello Everyone,
I’ll lead this Class II outing. We’ll follow a two-mile trail which climbs 1,000 feet (4 miles round trip). The upper part of the trail has several long switchbacks.
We may snowplow downhill. Conditions should be close to ideal. The round trip will take approximately 5 hours, with time for lunch.
Cerro Grande is part of the rim of the Jemez Caldera. It offers fine views.
Bring skins, as a fallback, and at least 1.5 quarts of water. Use sunscreen. Apply wax such as maxi-glide. The temperature could reach 40.
Park at the paved pullout on the North side of NM highway 4, just East of the Dome Road, FR 289. It’s West of MM 44 and East of MM 43, where the highway drops into the caldera to the West.
Aim to arrive at 9:30. Allow two hours from Albuquerque and one hour and a half from Santa Fe, taking the truck route and West Jemez Rd. through Los Alamos Lab. (Exit 502 towards White Rock on NM 4. Take a right on the Truck route. Pass through the Los Alamos guard station adjacent to the Omega bridge. Continue five miles on the West Jemez Rd. to its terminus with NM 4, and turn right.).
You may keep me posted at (505) 270-1476. Please RSVP.
