Hello Skiers,
On Sunday, Nov. 3, Sam Beard and Michael Arndt will lead an outing to remove logs from the East Fork East Loop Trail north of NM-4. We will park at Los Griegos Trailhead and hike to the east on the highway and go north on the Las Conchas Burn Trail. After following
a connector trail, we will hike clockwise around the loop trail and remove any logs from the trail with a chain saw.
Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target parking lot SE of the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte.
Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring work gloves, a warm jacket, snacks, drinks, eye and ear protection, a hard hat, and lunch. Tools will be provided.
If we have time, we will remove a log from the Crater Spur Trail just south of Redondo Campground and near the highway. This log is lying across this trail on a hillside and is very difficult to cross on skis. Two hydrothermal steam explosion craters lie on
this trail. One is very large and deep and is the result of ground water contacting magma. The resulting steam explosion creates a crater that can be as deep as 90 feet and have a diameter of a few hundred feet. These craters are found only on the Banco Bonito
lava flow in the Redondo CG area in the Valles Caldera. This flow was about 40,000 years ago and is the last flow in the caldera.
We will meet volunteers from Los Alamos or Santa Fe at the Los Griegos trailhead at about 9:45 to 10:00 am.
