Tom and I went to the Valles Caldera today. We arrived about 9:20 and we were the first people to ski from the cabin district. We tried following the “drunk elk” trail but as expected it kept staggering around so we took turns breaking trail
in 20-22” of new snow. We made it to the junction to South Mountain (about 1 1/2 miles) and stopped to eat and rest. We decided it was all the trail breaking we could manage and turned around. After we started back, we met three skiers that were very happy
we had broken trail. Shortly after that one of the rangers came by in a snow mobile which made the ski back much easier and quicker. Our skis started to stick near the end of our ski. It was a beautiful day and we encountered only 7 people skiing and snowshoeing.
The skiing should be pretty descent there for a few days since they were beginning to groom.
