Senator Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, said late Saturday that he had dropped his contentious plan to sell millions of acres of public lands (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/12/climate/senate-gop-public-land-sale.html) from the sweeping domestic policy package that the Senate will soon begin debating.
Senator Martin Heinrich, Democrat of New Mexico, celebrated the plan’s demise while warning other lawmakers not to attempt to resurrect it.
“To those already plotting to go after our public lands another way: Don’t. Unless you like losing,” Mr. Heinrich said in a statement on Saturday.
For 10 years, Outdoor Alliance has united the human-powered outdoor recreation community to achieve lasting conservation victories. Our work has permanently protected 40 million acres of public land, secured $5.1 billion in funding for the outdoors, and has

Public Lands
You’re probably here because you love nordic skiing, our unique events like the Alley Loop or Grand Traverse, or you enjoy spending time in the vast open spaces that surround Crested Butte.
At CB Nordic, outdoor winter recreation is the heart of our work. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing require wide open spaces and access to them to provide the trails you know and love.
Our operations are unique in that we groom on a combination of private and public land. We work with over forty generous land owners who grant us access, the Crested Butte Land Trust who protects the land surrounding our little town, the Town of Crested Butte and the Town of Mt. Crested Butte who care deeply about the health and well-being of valley residents and visitors, and last but not least the federal government as we pass through public land administered by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
While the majority of our trails pass through locally conserved land, approximately 10% of our trails traverse public land. Additionally, our unique and storied events, such as the Grand Traverse and Gothic Mountain Tour, use public land almost exclusively.
The bill before the U.S. Senate, the Big Beautiful Bill, has the potential to include the sale of public lands across the West. While the legislation is evolving daily, any sale of public lands could greatly impact CB Nordic and our operations as they currently stand.
As a CB Nordic enthusiast, we encourage you to learn more about the bill and the proposed sale of public lands.
Outdoor Alliance and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers are great sources of information, including regularly updated maps and easy resources to help you contact your members of Congress if you wish to get involved.
