Besides scheduling trips to the snow, you can get ready for the immediate use of last night's snow by finding internet
webcam/snowcams and NWS to check (and not waiting for skier reports, just go!).  Places with gentle slopes good for practice are
in Jemez mtns:  Redondo campground, Valles Caldera, and  Clear Creek campground near Cuba.
reason to consider "just go!" is the snow melts and the first snow is the best for beginners or experts.

I hiked from  Clear Creek campground this summer seeing lots of nice mild swoopy slopes and nearly flat zones to be a beginner on.
