Hi Luis : I think you're right in that this map was intended to show the groomed( Sandia Nordic ) trails only.
. The idea being to keep other users off these trails in non snow times( when possible).
A map with inclusion of all the Crest area trails could be added for all season users. BTW, the Sandia Nordic trails are "official" forest service trails intended to be used by skiers and snowshoers only in the winter months.
The Sandia Nordic map includes directions on proper winter use which is important. Many people don't understand this and may innocently misuse the groomed trails. The map provides this information. Not everyone looks at the maps but it's better than nothing!
I don't believe this map was intended to guide general trail users and a more comprehensive map at the Ellis trailhead would be nice for those folks.

Agreed, the map is totally confusing. It is intended to depict the Sandia Nordic trail system as if you're looking up at the Crest. The north arrow is small and hidden in the lower left hand corner I've met hikers and bikers who were equally confused. Moreover, it does not match the other, larger USFS maps at various kiosks. Map was made by a well-meaning and knowledgeable FOSM member who serves as an unpaid USFS volunteer. Perhaps it was intended to be temporary or used for winter only. Given the popularity of this area and the multiple converging trails, a new map with north pointing up would be much better. This would match apps such as AllTrails and TrailForks.

Thanks everyone. Had a lovely hike on Ellis today. It was sunny and calm above the clouds and winds below. The view from the Crest was spectacular, with the cloud bank blanketing the peaks.

The trail map on the service road heading south at Ellis is confusing because the North arrow points that way (pic). Two hikers were fooled into going south when they thought they were going north. They didn't know till they got to the tram. Maybe the map should be horizontal and rotated?! Just saying. :)

Hi all. Where are the best "leaf peeping" sites in the Sandias or Jemez this week or next? Likely they'll be near favorite XC skiing trails.

Thanks,
