Hi All- Someone today suggested that I forward to the Ski Club a happening regarding Sandia Pueblo and the Sandia Mtn. This is only an FYI, not meaning it to be a forum. Brian Anderson/Mtn Club sent out a nice synopsis with links. The Pueblo is proposing to transfer a swath of Ntl Forest land to their jurisdiction, as proposed last time in 2003. Their reported initial concern is the lack of support and policing by the Forest Service in the Juan Tabo Canyon area, including the trailheads. The full proposal would cut off several trails, including Chimney Canyon, Old La Luz, the Shield, Rincon, etc. In some of the links, one may find a 'who to contact' list. (a tip- don't call the Mayor! Not their issue.) As users of the mtn we may want to know the issues- you can check out the info and make up your own minds. No need to discuss this on Egroups, please... Our hard workers on the Rio Grande NF issue can keep having our focus!! Thanks.

Subject: [NMMC] IMPORTANT Proposed Sandia Mountain Land Transfer
Greetings NMMC Members,
Earlier this week, the NMMC Hike & Climb Sections received the attached “Urgent Action Needed to Save the Sandia Mountain Wilderness” email. It’s a deep dive into a complex situation, which we feel members should be well informed about. Basically, a proposal currently being discussed would transfer nearly 10,000 acres of public National Forest land in the Sandia Mountains into federal trust for the Pueblo of Sandia, which likely would limit recreational access. A map of the proposed area is also attached.
Additionally, the issues are beginning to receive news coverage.
A local coalition of homeowners and stakeholders has created a “Sandias For All” website with much of the information included in the email we received, congressional office contacts, and more, including congressional office contact. If you wish, you can register to be on their mailing list to receive updates: https://sandiasforall.org/
Thanks,
Brian Anderson
NMMC President
